When an NDIS Provider Needs an ABN
1. If You Are Operating as a Business
If you plan to operate as a business even as a sole trader, you need an ABN. This applies whether you are working part time, full time or alongside other work.
Example: You provide support work to NDIS participants and issue invoices for your time. This is considered running a business so you should have an ABN before you send your first invoice.
2. Before You Invoice or Receive Payment
Normally NDIS plan managers, agencies & participants will usually request your ABN before they process payment. Without it your payments could potentially be delayed or even have 47% tax withheld from your payment.
Tip: Apply for your ABN early so it is ready before your first job. The process is free and can be completed quickly online.
3. To Claim Business Deductions
Operating without an ABN can make it harder to claim deductions such as fuel, equipment or training expenses. An ABN shows you are running a legitimate business which makes it easier to stay compliant at tax time.
Best Practices for NDIS Providers
Apply as soon as possible ideally before your first client or invoice
Keep accurate records of income, expenses, and GST if applicable
When you earn over $75,000 in income, you will be required to register for GST
Stay updated on ATO guidelines for NDIS providers
Seek advice from a professional if you are unsure about ABN or GST requirements
A Common Misconception
Some people think they do not need an ABN if they only work a few hours each week. If you are delivering services as a business and getting paid, you still need one.
