When your training directly relates to the work you do and helps you maintain or improve your skills, the ATO often allows you to claim a deduction.

This includes:

  • Seminars, conferences and training courses

  • Registration costs

  • Fares to attend the event such as flights or transport

  • Accommodation and meals if you need to stay away from home overnight to attend

Keep in mind, you cannot claim the private part of a trip if your travel includes both work and leisure.

What happens if you attend a seminar or conference while on holidays

If your main purpose is private, such as going on holiday, and you simply attend a seminar while away, you can only claim the seminar cost itself. Travel, accommodation and meals cannot be claimed.

Are First Aid Courses Tax Deductible?

Yes, if you are a nominated first aid person at your workplace or you need the training to respond to emergencies in your job.

You cannot claim if:

  • your employer paid for the training

  • you were required to have the qualification before you got the job

If the training is required during your employment and helps you carry out your role safely, it is deductible.
